Shining from the Inside

As Christians there should be something different about us. When you become a Christian, God comes to live within you. There can be nothing as dramatic as that. From that point on our lives are different. As a result we should start reflecting on the outside what is happening on the inside. We can shine from the inside.

WHAT IS DIFFERENT

Things change when the living God comes to live in our hearts and lives.

2 Corinthians 5:17 When someone becomes a Christian, he becomes a brand new person inside. He is not the same anymore. A new life has begun! (Living Bible)

In another translation it says it a little differently.

·2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! (NIV)

When God touches our lives we become new and different on the inside.

Be Expectant

FUTURE ORIENTATED PEOPLE

We have a choice! We can live in the past and be past-orientated people, or we can look to the future and be future-orientated people. It speaks of focus. We can be backward focused or forward focused. I believe that we must be forward looking people!

Philippians 3:12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me.

Philippians 3:14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

This ‘pressing on’ attitude is the attitude of future orientated people.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CHOICE

Choices play such a vital part in our lives. Choices dictate our future and to a large degree even our present. We are constantly faced with choices. Even God gives us choices.

Joshua 24:15 Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve.

Deuteronomy 30:19 I have set before you life or death, blessing or curse. Oh, that you would choose life; that you and your children might live!  (The first step to moving on is choice.)

It starts as we choose to move on and leave the things that we have been holding on to. (e.g.: Past hurt, Past success, past failure or past disappointments)

If you are fearful, ask God to give you wisdom to make the right choices. Don’t get cold feet. Step forward and let’s move on.

BE EXPECTANT

To be able to be expectant we need to be God-orientated. Nothing is too hard for God! Expect God to come through for you. Get hold of the promises again. Begin to read them and believe them. As a pregnant lady would make arrangements for the child, so we must be expectant and prepare for what God has got for us. It may well be that something has been conceived within us and we need to give it a chance to develop and grow. But the promise is there! God has a plan for each one of us, no matter how we feel.

Jeremiah 29:11 I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

Courage and Boldness

LEAVING THE PAST / LETTING GO

This is the challenging part for most of us.

Remember the example of the 2 chairs. Imagine for a moment a large room. At one side of the room is a chair that you are seated on. On the other side of the room is another chair that you need to get to. Now while holding onto your chair stretch as far as you can and try to reach the other chair. It can never be done. You must leave the security of the current or the past in your pursuit of the next or the future thing.

The Bible speaks about forgetting the former things. It is a time to get rid of the unnecessary and things that would get in the way. It is a time to deal with things so that nothing will stop your progress. Here are 2 examples: Bad relationships. (Bad company corrupts good character.)  and dealing with unresolved issues. In the book of Ecclesiastes it speaks of certain positives and negatives regarding time. Let us look for a moment at the negative aspects.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 There is a right time for everything: A time to die; A time to kill; A time to destroy; A time to cry; A time to grieve; A time for scattering stones; A time not to hug; A time to lose; A time for throwing away; A time to tear; A time to be quiet; A time for hating; A time for war.

Many people only face the positive aspects, but there is more. Sometimes we have to deal with things so that we can move on and step into what God has got for us.

COURAGE AND BOLDNESS

This all calls for courage.

When Joshua was to lead the people of Israel into the Promised Land he was faced with tremendous change. From being someone who followed Moses, he now had to lead. The very promise of the Promised Land that lay just ahead of them, meant battles and challenges. It was not a time for regrets and discouragement; instead it was time for courage. God went on to encourage Joshua on numerous occasions to be courageous.

Leave regrets, leave discouragement. Step out of despondency. Step out of failure and be determined and committed! God is looking for courage in us!

Stepping Forward and Taking Ground

STEPPING FORWARD

Stepping forward is a vital component to a fulfilled life. If you have ever been caught in a ‘no win situation’ you will discover how demoralizing it can be. We need to have vision and hope and be able to move towards it to be able to feel fulfilled. Stepping forward brings growth. Stepping forward brings progress. Stepping forward involves faith, because the future is unknown and unsure! One of the biggest stumbling blocks to stepping forward is baggage. Baggage is the things that we carry with us that hold us back or limit our progress. The next challenge is change itself. Change can be very threatening, but we can be secure, because the God who never changes is with us to see us through the changes as we step forward.

TAKING GROUND

I believe that as we move on God wants us to take new ground. What this really means is that we can become stronger in those areas. Perhaps you have lost ground: In your marriage, in your finances, in your business or in your relationships. Perhaps you are not where you should be or you know things are worse than they were? It is time to begin to believe that God will not only allow you to reclaim lost ground but to even believe that He will give you more ground in the process.

Deuteronomy 11:24 Every place where you set your foot will be yours: Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the Euphrates River to the western sea.

It may even call for something radical as we take back what the enemy has stolen from us!I remember a song we used to sing: ‘I went to the enemies camp and I took back what he stole from me!’ Do not give the devil a foothold in your life. Begin to believe God that you and your family will take new ground!

Stepping Forward

Moving on and stepping into the future is not always easy. It is, however, a very important part of what God has in store for each one of us. There is a time for remembering but then there is a time to say: ‘Thus far the Lord has been good and He has brought us this far, but there is more.’ The past can be our biggest stumbling block (both success and failure) and it can also be our biggest building block. Moving can involve many different things. It can include a new season, a new dimension or a new chapter. Moving on inevitably involves change. Change is what scares most people into complacency. But it is change and a ‘moving forward’ attitude that takes us into what God has for us!

IT IS TIME

The time is right for this to begin to take place. There is no time like the present. I once heard someone give an example, which I have called ‘the 2 chairs example’. Life is like traveling between 2 chairs. The chairs are just too far apart to be able to be held simultaneously. If we hold onto the one we cannot reach the other. We have to let go of the one and step forward until we reach the next chair. The longer we hold onto the one the less chance we have of grabbing hold of the next chair. In the book of Ecclesiastes it speaks of certain positives and negatives regarding time. Let us look for a moment at the positive aspects.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 There is a right time for everything: A time to be born; A time to plant; A time to harvest; A time to heal; A time to rebuild; A time to laugh; A time to dance; A time for gathering stones; A time to hug; A time to find; A time for keeping; A time to repair; A time to speak up; A time for loving; A time for peace.

I believe that we are living in a time when it is a time to build and take new territory and ground.

Isaiah 54:2-3 Enlarge the place of your tent, and let the curtains of your habitations be stretched out; spare not; lengthen your cords and strengthen your stakes, for you will spread abroad to the right hand and to the left.

Sons of God are led by the Spirit

WE DON’T HAVE TO DO WHAT OUR SINFUL NATURES WANT US TO DO

I know that the pull of sin is very strong. But we have the opportunity of making the right choice. We are not obligated to do what everyone else is doing. We can make the choice to obey and be controlled by the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:12 So, dear brothers, you have no obligations whatever to your old sinful nature to do what it begs you to do.

It can be different.

BECAUSE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT WE CAN OVERCOME TEMPTATION

Romans 8:13 For if you keep on following it you are lost and will perish, but if through the power of the Holy Spirit you crush it and its evil deeds, you shall live.

The Holy Spirit is the one who can help us to overcome doing wrong. This verse tells us that we can crush sin. It also tells us that we can have LIFE. This is the lifestyle of the over comer. It is possible because of the HOLY SPIRIT. The choice is obvious.

SONS OF GOD ARE LED BY THE SPIRIT

Romans 8:14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.

One of the qualifications for being God’s son, is that we are lead by the Holy Spirit. This does not happen by accident. It does not take place automatically as we live life. It happens by deliberate decision and a lifestyle of the pursuit of the Spirit. I want to be one of those who are lead by the Spirit. I trust that you will join me, in this decision.

The Holy Spirit brings life

Abstract composition about free running

THE HOLY SPIRIT CAN CONTROL OUR LIVES

Romans 8:9 But you are not like that. You are controlled by your new nature if you have the Spirit of God living in you. (And remember that if anyone doesn’t have the Spirit of Christ living in him, he is not a Christian at all.)

As Christians we have the Holy Spirit living in us. And because of this we are able to experience life in the Spirit. We need to accept this fact and begin to enjoy this way of life. It starts as we begin to allow the Holy Spirit to have a greater role in our lives.

THE HOLY SPIRIT BRINGS US LIFE

The Holy Spirit wants to bring life to our spirits. But He wants to do more than this. He wants to even bring life to our physical bodies.

Romans 8:11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you.

There is LIFE, with a capital L, available to us. Let’s not miss it, but lets grab it with both hands.

Following the Holy Spirit brings life

FOLLOWING THE HOLY SPIRIT BRINGS LIFE

You want a little bit more of the abundant life that God promised? Begin following the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:6 Following after the Holy Spirit leads to life and peace.

This is a great reward. It is exactly the opposite to what the world offers. The world offers stress and pressure. God offers us life and peace. I want this life and peace.

FOLLOWING OUR OLD NATURES LEADS TO SPIRITUAL DEATH

Many times the things that the world offers, bring us only heartache and pain.

Romans 8:6 Following after the Holy Spirit leads to life and peace, but following after the old nature leads to death.

Here is an example: dislike leads to resentment, resentment leads to hatred, hatred leads to murder, murder leads to death. This just shows that if we are controlled by the wrong attitudes, like resentment, anger, jealousy or unforgiveness, it can have a devastating effect on our lives. This is not what God desires for us.

Walking in the Spirit

The Bible tells us we should live a life of walking in the Spirit. But what does this mean? What is involved in walking in the Spirit? Our minds play a vital role when it comes to walking in the Spirit. I believe that we all desire to develop this lifestyle. This on-going, ever-growing life of contact with the Holy Spirit. I believe it is possible.

WHAT CONTROLS US IS OF VITAL IMPORTANCE

Romans 8:5 Those who let themselves be controlled by their lower natures live only to please themselves.

The issue is that we want to please God. In the light of this we need to choose what we will allow to control us. If we are controlled by our lower natures we will live to please ourselves. And this is not pleasing to God.

FOLLOWING THE HOLY SPIRIT LEADS TO DOING THE THINGS THAT PLEASE GOD.

Romans 8:5 Those who follow after the Holy Spirit find themselves doing those things that please God.

This is what I want to do. What does it mean to follow after the Holy Spirit? I believe that it involves the following:

1. Being filled with the Holy Spirit
2. Listening to and looking for the Holy Spirit
3. Hearing Him speak
4. Responding to and obeying the Holy Spirit

This is a far more wonderful life. We need to realize that we can be controlled by two realms

A. The physical

B. The spiritual

What will our choice be? I want to be doing the things that please God. The key is following the Holy Spirit.

Turning to God for his glory and mercy

WE CAN TURN TO GOD FOR HIS GLORY

As Christians we are meant to reflect God’s glory. But we need to turn to Him to experience His presence and glory for ourselves before we can reflect it to others. God wants to make His presence and His glory a reality to us. Let us turn to God and expect Him to do this for us.

2 Corinthians 3:18 And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

TURNING TO GOD TO HEAL OUR LAND

In each of the lands in which we live there is a need for healing. No country or land is without its scars and wounds. As we turn to God, He promises to do so much for us and for our nations.

2 Chronicles 7:14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

Notice what happens when we turn to God:

1. God will hear from heaven

2. He will bring forgiveness

3. He will bring healing.

This can also be applied to the ‘land of our lives’. It is time to turn to God. It will be worth it!

TURNING TO GOD FOR MERCY

We can turn to God for mercy. We all need His mercy.

Lamentations 3:22-23 Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassion’s fail not. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness.

God wants to make His mercy available to us.

Isaiah 55:7 Let men cast off their wicked deeds; let them banish from their minds the very thought of doing wrong! Let them turn to the Lord that he may have mercy upon them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon!

There is no time like the present to be able to turn to God. Let us turn to God now while we have time. Prayer: God we need your mercy on our lives and on the world in which we live!
