The Comfort of God’s Word

THE RESULT OF KNOWING THE COMFORT OF GOD

When we have known and experienced God’s comfort we in turn can show comfort to others.

2 Corinthians 1:4 And why does He do this? So that when others are troubled, needing our sympathy and encouragement, we can pass on to them this same help and comfort God has given us.

Do you know anyone who needs comfort right now? Perhaps you can be the source of comfort that that person needs. As God’s comfort is real in our lives we can pass this comfort on to others.

1 Thessalonians 5:14 Dear brothers, warn those who are lazy, comfort those who are frightened, take tender care of those who are weak, and be patient with everyone.

THE COMFORT OF GOD’S WORD.

I have found God’s word, the Bible, to be a great source of comfort in my life. As God has given me His promises, they have been a great source of strength and comfort in my life.

Psalm 119:52 From my earliest youth I have tried to obey You; Your Word has been my comfort.

If God has given you promises, hold onto them. Don’t let them go. Let God’s word be a source of comfort and strength in your life.

THE PRAYER

Here is my prayer for you.

2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 May our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting comfort and hope, which we don’t deserve, comfort your hearts with all comfort, and help you in every good thing you say and do.

Here is a prayer you can pray for yourself.

Psalm 119:76 Now let Your loving-kindness comfort me, just as You promised.

We need to learn to walk, as a lifestyle, in the comfort that God offers.

Acts 9:31 The believers learned how to walk in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit.

May you know the comfort of God in your life!

Comfort In Difficulty

HOW DOES GOD COMFORT US?

There are so many ways in which God wants to comfort us. It is interesting to look at some verses from the Bible that explains to us just how God wants to comfort us.

Isaiah 66:13 As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you.

There is something about the way a mother comforts a child that no other individual can do. God wants to comfort you in a way that no one else would ever be able to comfort you.

Psalm 27:10 For if my father and mother should abandon me, You would welcome and comfort me.

It is as though God is ready and waiting to pick us up and make us His own.

Psalm 10:17 Lord, You know the hopes of humble people. Surely You will hear their cries and comfort their hearts by helping them.

God comforts us by stepping into our situations and helping us.

Isaiah 61:1 He has sent me to comfort the brokenhearted.

God can also comfort us by using other people, who He has called as comforters, to comfort us.

COMFORT IN DIFFICULTY

It is usually when we face difficulty that we need comfort.

2 Corinthians 1:6 But in our trouble God has comforted us.

In those desperate moments in life God wants to come through and comfort us. We face difficulty every day but there are certain times in life when we all face immense trouble. It is in the heat of these times that God wants us to know His comfort in an extra-ordinary way. When this happens we know what it means to be carried by God.

The God of All Comfort

THE GOD OF ALL COMFORT

Perhaps you feel like no one knows what you are going through and no one knows what you need. When we face challenge and difficulty it is easy to feel that no one can identify with what you are facing. It is for this reason that it is so wonderful to know God. The Bible tells us that He is the God of ALL comfort.

2 Corinthians 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort. (NIV)

No matter what you are facing, God knows and understands and He wants to comfort and greatly strengthen you! Nothing you are facing is beyond His ability to comfort you.

GOD WANTS TO COMFORT YOU!

This is exactly what God wants to do for each one of us.

2 Corinthians 1:3 What a wonderful God we have—He is the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the source of every mercy, and the one who so wonderfully comforts and strengthens us in our hardships and trials.

2 Corinthians 1:7 God will tenderly comfort you when you undergo these same sufferings. He will give you the strength to endure.

This verse tells us that God WILL comfort you! It is part of God’s very nature and character to reach out and to comfort us as we pass through any form of difficulty. We must take advantage of the comfort that God is offering us.

The Comfort of God

Have you ever needed to know the comfort of God in your life? Perhaps you went through a difficult time or a difficult season and God carried you and comforted you. Perhaps you are facing challenges or hardship and you need the comfort that only God can give. One of the names that is given to God is the ‘God of all comfort’. He wants to comfort and carry us as we face the things that life brings our way. Allow Him to comfort you today!

THE MEANING OF COMFORT

If we understand what ‘comfort’ is we can understand what God is offering. Comfort is to give strength and bring hope to ease the grief or trouble that someone is facing and to console. It can also mean to alleviate the grief or sense of loss, or trouble of circumstances and situations. The definition, which I really like, is “to strengthen greatly.” This is what God wants to do for us. He wants to come and strengthen us. But He wants to do even more than this. He wants to relieve, refresh, renew, restore and reassure. Perhaps the greatest thing that God wants to do as He comforts us is simply to help us.

Who Can Use The Door?

WHO CAN USE THE DOOR?

Is the door accessible to all of us, or can just a select few go through? The answer is that anyone can enter, but the issue is that they must enter.

John 10:9 ‘I am the door. Any one who enters in through me will be saved

The fundamental issue here is that the door is available to those individuals who will enter it. In essence Jesus advertises the product. He does not hide it; he says ‘I AM THE DOOR’. It was intended to draw our attention to the fact. It was intended to make the way clear. No doubts or wondering. Jesus made this issue clear so that we would use the door.

THE REWARDS OF USING THE DOOR

There are special promises for those who use the door. We can look forward to them, and we can enjoy them. They will make our lives full!

I.  SALVATION

John 10:9 ‘Any one who enters in through me will be saved – will live’

This takes place at once, forever and completely. As we enter through the door of Jesus we are saved.

II.  LIBERTY

John 10:9 ‘he will come in and go out freely’.

This is not a prison door but it is a door for a flock (you and me) and the Shepherd wants to give us freedom.

III.  ACCESS

We can go in through this door.

·John 10:9 ‘enters in’.

We can have access. No pleading, no begging, no hiding, no creeping in, but access. Access to fellowship. Access to instruction. Access to help. Access to enjoyment and access to His presence.

IV. NOURISHMENT

We all need spiritual food. This spiritual food is found in Jesus.

John 10:9   ‘and will find pasture.’

This is the promise. Good pasture to sheep is everything that sheep need. Good pasture to us is all that we need. We can find pasture and all that we may need in Jesus. Jesus is the door.

Jesus Is The Door

THERE IS ONLY ONE DOOR

To get to the things of God and God Himself, there is only one door. His name is Jesus. There is no other door. Don’t try to look for another one door – It wastes time. All roads do NOT lead to God. Only one does – Jesus.

Acts 4:12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.

JESUS IS THE DOOR

Jesus said: ‘I am the door’.

Look for everything of God in Jesus. Don’t look anywhere else. The door is a person, whose name is Jesus. The door is not in ceremonies. The door is not in doctrines. The door is not in achievements. But the door is Jesus Himself.

HOW DO WE USE THIS DOOR?

We are meant to go into and through the door. We are not meant to watch the door. We are not meant to sit at the door. We are not meant to guard the door. We were meant to enter the door.

John 10:9 ‘I am the door. Any one who enters in through me will be saved – will live; he will come in and go out freely, and will find pasture.’

Jesus is the door to all that God offers us.

The Door

A door is a common object, but a very necessary one. Imagine a room with no door. It would be practically useless. A door makes what a room offers useful. We have a door and His name is Jesus

WHO IS THE DOOR

Jesus is the door. He is the door to all that God has promised you and me.  He is the door to life and life in abundance.

John 10:9 ‘I am the door.’

The picture Jesus is using here is of a shepherd and sheep. The door is the door to the sheepfold. This is one of the humblest types of door.

THE NEED FOR THE DOOR

Without a door you cannot access something. A door is a point of access. It makes the room usable Because there is access to God, through the door of Jesus, we can get hold of all that God has in store for us. As a result we can have access to God. We can have access to His peace. We can have access to His truth. We can have access to His Salvation. We can have access to His presence. We can have access to heaven. All through the door of Jesus.

Thus Far The Lord Has Helped Us

GOD WANTS TO HELP US BY DOING WHAT HE SAID HE WOULD DO

What has God promised? He wants to do what He said He would do. Hold onto all that God has spoken concerning your life.

Joshua 21:44-45 The Lord helped them destroy all their enemies and every good thing the Lord had promised them came true.

God wants to fulfill His promises. This is also a way in which He wants to help us.

THE RESULT OF KNOWING HIS HELP IS THAT WE CAN REST

How different from the world’s perspective.

Psalm 63:6-8 I lie awake at night thinking of you – of how much you have helped me.  How I rejoice through the night beneath the protecting shadow of your wings.  I follow close behind you, protected by your strong right arm.

It is time to follow close behind God. It is time to stick to Him.

Psalm 116:7 Now I can relax.  For the Lord has done this wonderful miracle for me.

Can you conceive that God would desire that you rest?

THUS FAR THE LORD HAS HELPED US

If He has helped us this far, He will help us further.

1 Samuel 7:12 Then Samuel took a stone, and named it Ebenezer, saying Thus far has the LORD helped us.

Let’s rejoice in His help so far and let’s expect His help for the future!

God Helps Those Who Trust

GOD HELPS THOSE WHO TRUST

We need to trust the Lord.

Jeremiah 39:18  “As a reward for trusting me, I will preserve your life and keep you safe.”

We seem to feel more comfortable in trusting ourselves than in trusting the creator of the universe.

Psalm 28:7 He is my strength, my shield from every danger.  I trusted in Him, and He helped me.

Trusting God calls for FAITH. Faith is the thing that moves GOD.

IF GOD IS OUR HELPER, WE ARE HAPPY

The result of trusting God and Him helping us brings joy into our lives.

Psalm 28:7 He is my strength, my shield from every danger.  I trusted in Him, and He helped me.  Joy rises in my heart until I burst out in songs of praise to Him.

David knew this joy.

Psalm 146:5 But happy is the man who has the God of Jacob as his helper, whose hope is in the Lord his God.

Is God your helper or do you just help yourself along the path of life? There is a dimension in which we can know God as a helper throughout our lives.
